Herman's Hermits were as far away from the Animals as could be yet they, like the Animals were a Mickie Most group. They were from Manchester and featured a young singer called Peter Noone, who was 16 but looked younger. He took the name Herman from the Bullwinkle show TV cartoon, because he thought one of the characters looked like him (but he'd got the name wrong, it was Sherman) and the group was one of those rapidly formed when it was seen that groups from Liverpool were really making it big. In fact, the group was barely in existence when their manager sent a telegram to Mickie Most (saying, "Come and discover Herman and his Hermits") wrapped around a plane ticket and hotel reservation. It worked and bubblegum music was on its way back.
Their first record was "I'm Into Something Good", which made number 1 in September, 1964. It was a very innocuous record, optimum inoffensiveness, as were all his others that followed. Sometimes they struck it big, sometimes they never moved at all, it depended on how much sugar the record buyers could take at each particular time. The Americans, however, took to him straight away and the group did consistently well there. In Britain, their biggest hits have been, "Silhouettes", "Wonderful World", "A Must To Avoid", "No Milk Today" and "There's A Kind of Hush".
