MANIA comes in several shapes and forms these days. Latest one to hit the pop world is Hermania. And the young man who's started this off - if you haven't already guessed - is called Herman.
Herman, 17 on Guy Fawkes Day, must be one of the youngest idols to emerge in this era. Still, when you come to think of it, pop fans are getting younger and younger by the day, so it seems quite reasonable that the singers themselves should, too.
It's quite likely that Herman's face, if not the name, seems familiar on your television screen, apart from his appearances with his group. For Herman - or Peter Noone, as his mum and dad know him - is an old hand at T.V. appearances as Len Fairclough's son in Coronation Street.
Herman didn't exactly decide to change his name for stage purposes. It was changed for him by the rest of the Hermits - that's Karl Green on bass guitar, Lek Leckenby lead and rhythm guitar, drummer
Barry Whitwam and Keith Hopwood also lead and rhythm guitar.
In Manchester - where all the boys come from - there's a cartoon television show called "The Bullwinkle Show". One day, Herman - who was studying for exams - was bending over his books looking rather studious in a pair of glasses. And the others noticed he looked rather like a character in "The Bullwinkle Show" called Sherman. Gradually the name got shortened to "Herman".
They may be young - oldest, apart from Lek who is 21, is only 18 - but if anyone thinks that that could be a drawback, we know you'll change your mind once you've seen them on stage. They don't try to look or sound older; they just sound great and well . . . cute!
And remember, in a few years when most of today's big names are another generation, Herman and his Hermits will still be pretty young . . . .
