If you ask pop fans what made Liverpool famous, they will say The Beatles. Ask them what made Manchester famous they are liable to say Herman and The Hermits. But if you ask Herman what his home town is renowned for, he will say Manchester United football team. Why? Because he has been a fan of theirs for years!

"Me grandad used to take me to the game when I was six. He was a great fan himself," Herman told me. "Football matches are so much fun. The atomosphere is just great. That is why I like the game so much. Why do I like Manchester United?" he thought for a while. "Well, they're just the best and after all they do come from Manchester. Like me!
With all the enthusiasm Herman has for the game, one might think that he is a modest Bobby Charlton, but one couldn't be farther from the truth. Herman was, to quote Herman, "terrible" at the game. Though at seven he, too, had dreams of playing for the famous eleven.     But he couldn't have been that bad at the game because he played both at school and at a local club. His position was that of famed Bobby Charlton - left wing. Having no delusions about his football talent, Herman never had any illusions of becoming a professional player!

His favourite players are not difficult to guess - Nobbie Stiles and Bobby Charlton. So what does pin-up pop star Herman think of pin-up football star George Best?
"Oh he is very good," he said. I wonder what George would have to say about Herman?
"During the ages of eight and twelve I never missed a match!" A cheeky grin came to his face. "I used to sell programmes inside the grounds!"
I asked Herman what team he would like to play in now, if he could.
"The showbiz eleven - if I had the time," he replied. A far cry from his childhood dreams, and yet maybe it isn't. After all, he is a big star, even if it wasn't football that put him there.
In 1958 tragedy struck Manchester. The plane carrying Manchester United from Munich crashed, killing many of their players. Luckily not all were lost and from then on the players set about building up yet another world famous team. Herman still has newspaper headlines from that day. He keeps all world shattering news headlines. Amongst his collection is the death of Churchill and the assassination of Kennedy.
Nobody can deny that the football boys from Manchester have done a wonderful job. In the words of Manchester's pop idol:
"There is nothing left to say except that there is no team to rival Manchester United."
Well, Herman's loyalty is great, but it's a shame that it didn't get them through to the cup final!
Never mind, though. If all the Herman fans join the Manchester United fans, then nothing will stop them winning the cup in 1968!
