That Groovy Group - Herman's Hermits

Herman's Hermits, while natives of Manchester, England, have become citizens of the world because their popularity in so many different countries. Thanks to appearances on British, Canadian and American television and in movies, they are recognized by their fans all over the globe

THERE are many young people, and quite a few older folks, too, who resent the name Herman. There's nothing wrong with it, of course, but tell that to those persons who feel insulted when you call them by that name.
There is, however, a very funny young fellow who enjoys hearing the name Herman echoed about. Herman , ironically, is not his real name. His real name is Peter Blair Dennis Bernard Noone, which is quite a mouthful, and he really likes it when people call him plain Herman, period.
As you have guessed by now, the Herman in question is the leader of the illustrious Herman's Hermits, a leading musical group whose fame has spread wherever records are played.
While visiting a club near his Manchester, England home, Peter Blair Dennis Bernard Noone noticed that a group that was entertaining the customers did not have a vocalist. He went up to the group and boldly asked them if he could sing with them. As you now know, recording history was made in that club that evening.
Peter Blair Dennis Noone was an immediate success and so was the group, which was at that time called the Heartbeats. Like all young people who have made the show business scene, they knew that they had arrived. But, they needed something to put them a peg above the noisy herd.
Without too much hesitation, they decided upon a new name. Their old name was too everyday. and they knew that something catchy was needed. They had originally gotten the name Heartbeats from an early recording of the late Buddy Holly.
Ideas for a new name came from almost everywhere. Friends, family, other show business people, and so forth; the way the group chose the name was sort of kookie, and really a mistake which they never intend to correct.
AN AMERICAN cartoon show, The Bullwinkle Show, was the rage on British television. One of the characters was named Sherman. The Heartbeats liked the character but thought his name was Herman, not Sherman.
So they named their new singer, Herman, by mistakenly dropping the S in Sherman. We wonder how their name would sound if they had the S in the name and started calling the group Sherman's Shermits!
Show business had now given birth to new stars. Herman and the Heartbeats didn't sound all that good, so they decided to name themselves the Hermits. Now the group was officially called Herman's Hermits. Their new name gave the group the togetherness they felt they needed. It was sort of a combination like ice and cream which went together perfectly. Our boy Herman was no real newcomer to the theatrical world. For more than two years he studied at the Manchester School of Music. His major areas of study were drama and voice. An agent got hold of Herman and he began appearing on many of the popular British TV shows, mainly dramas.
It is very obvious that Herman is now using his talents to the fullest; while on TV he could only use his acting ability. With the Hermits, Herman can really let go and use his voice, which has already brought him in more money than he ever made as a straight actor. Along with Herman are four talented performers. Barry Whitwam on drums, Keith Hopwood and Derek Leckenby who alternate on lead and rhythm guitar, and Karl Green who manipulates the bass.
Believe it or not, the group's average age is only 20, while its leader, Herman, the baby of the group, is a mere 19. Although many other groups in music business fib about their ages for purely business reasons, these boys are telling the truth about their age. However, some nasty people have reported that Derek Leckenby is really 24 years old, and Keith Hopwood is 21. But who believes such gossip? If the boys say they're 20, then they're 20.
The Hermits and their leader Herman are with MGM Records. Their first LP album was "Introducing Herman's Hermits," which hit the top on the record charts because of one of the songs in the album, "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter."
They also hit the charts for more than four weeks with a record, "Can't Hear My Heart

Beat," which was number two at its peak.
The Mrs. Brown record has sold more than 6,000,000 copies, and has made for the group more than $800,000.
Handling the boys is an astute record promoter named Mickie Most. Mickie first heard the group when they were appearing in the Manchester area. He got them their first record, "I'm Into Something Good," which really started them on their way to the top.
Mickie saw the raw talent of the Herman's Hermits and knew he could help mold the group into a single entity with Herman at the helm.
It is noted in show business circles that the Herman's Hermits are millionaires. If they are, it is because of the good management of Mickie Most, who does get the most out the talents of the young group.
FOR example, MGM Pictures, probably the largest motion picture production company in the world, hired the group for a movie starring Connie Francis called "Where The Boys Meet The Girls." Very few rock 'n roll combos are ever hired to appear in major class A films. So you know that the group must have that extra something which endears it to an audience. Otherwise MGM won't pay a lot of money for just a group of fellows who look and sing well. MGM thought so much of Herman's Hermits that they signed the group for another movie called "There's No Place Like Space."
But what about the private life of Herman? Not too many people know that Herman'sbig weakness is clothes. As a matter of fact, he may spend more for clothes than many people earn in Britain.
But it is necessary for a performer to stand out in the crowd, and of course clothes make the difference when you want to make a good showing when in public.
Recently, Herman was chosen by the staff of the London Tailor and Cutter magazine as one of the ten best dressed men. This is quite an honor for a 19-year-old performer who a few years ago couldn't be picked out of a crowd for any reason.
But Herman seems to be taking all of his honors in his stride. An extremely important fact about his private life which few people know is that recently Herman bought his mother and dad a home in Switzerland. With the aid of an interior decorator, he helped decorate the place and friends tell us that the colors are simply wild.
In fact he got the ideas for the colors from a home he rented while in Beverly Hills, California. The house had a bathroom with a flaming red color scheme.
When the group was in Hollywood, Herman went ape over the wonderful leisure existence of the inhabitants, and he, too, went native.
He swam, went riding and also enjoyed running. His running was limited to shopping and some of the swinging spots in the area. However, when he's in New York he's strictly business. During his last trip there, he spent most of his time answering the more than 10,000 birthday cards from his many fans.
He was also surprised to find a room filled with unusual birthday gifts from his ardent fans at the fan club headquarters in New York City.
Like all of us, Herman is looking for the ideal mate. "What I see in my dreams and what I look for wherever I go is that special face that glows with honesty, integrity, grace, and dignity. A natural face, unmarked by heavy make-up, but with just a touch of cosmetics to emphasize the natural loveliness of her inner beauty. For inner beauty is lasting beauty, and that is the quality I seek in the girl I want to be my bride," said Herman recently.
He wants a beautiful girl, but the beauty should be beneath the skin. "She should be good and generous and intelligent and articulate, because these are the qualities that transform an ordinary girl into a beauty. They leap to the eye and enchant the ear and leave a lingering impression that surface beauty alone can never match."
For a very young lad, Herman shows a great deal of insight far beyond his years. He's a sensitive fellow who is also looking for a sensitive girl. Not the kind of girl who wants a spotlight for herself, but one who realizes that she must share a life with someone who must stand alone in the spotlight because of his chosen profession.
"She must be understanding. That's important, too; more important than looks." When you see >Herman perform in the movies or on TV, or hear him on records, you'll know that he's not just another performer.
He's Herman of Herman's Hermits, a sensitive young lad with a million dollars worth of talent.
