What about Peter (Herman) Noone? Jodi Gable, a Los Angeles teen can tell you about the real thing. She had an honest-to-goodness date with Herman. Where did they go?
"Well, we spent some time at Knott's Berry Farm, and Pete just loved the haunted house there. He thought it was great fun.
"But the funniest thing was how Pete was fascinated by the American policemen. He kept saying over and over, 'You mean they let them carry guns? They really let them have guns?' he just couldn't understand it because the bobbies in England don't carry pistols," Jodi said, laughing as she remembered the puzzled look on his face.
The boys didn't like much of the American food. "In fact, they were sort of rude about it a few times. Like, they put out their cigarettes in the food one time."
The boys were enthralled with all the drive-ins - movies, restaurants, banks. "We ate at Tiny Naylor's one night, and they thought it was great," Jodi said.
"That night we were double dating with Derek, and he ordered french fries with vinegar on them. Can you imagine? Vinegar!
"When we went down to a pier at Malibu, there were several men sitting around fishing. Pete got all excited because it was 'just the same as England.'"
Jodi, Peter and a few other Hermits with their dates made the scene at The Trip, a hip Strip club. The Byrds were performing, and the Hermits didn't dig their sound at all, according to Jodi. "They even made fun of them a little."
What was it like to date Peter? "It made me feel self-conscious. When I would walk with Peter through a crowd to go into the hotel, girls would look at me like they were thinking, 'Who does she think she is!' But it never seemed to bother Pete. And I guess it was worth it because we had a wonderful time."
