Herman's Hermits - 'MMM ... I've Been Close To Them!'

1 girl 'n 5 Hermits! Get this private report on this unusual day!

NOT TOO long ago, we at TODAY'S TEENS received a letter from one of our readers. After reading it ourselves, we decided to print it - so all of you could read it, too. We think you'll find it very interesting!

I'd never gone to a real, live concert before - not until the Herman's Hermits concert. When I heard they were coming to my city, I just about died! You see, I count myself among their truest fans!
This may sound silly, but when the night of the concert came, I took such pains getting myself to look just right! Deep in my heart, I hoped that maybe one of The Hermits would see me in the audience. You know, he'd notice me sitting there and like me right away. Then after the concert, one of his representatives would find me in the crowd and ask me to come backstage to meet the boys.
Sure, it was silly, but I couldn't help it. All through the concert, I kept waiting to feel their eyes on me - and only me. When the concert was over, I managed to squeeze my way to the front, near the stage.
I remember wondering where the Hermits had gone ... whether they were backstage or whether they'd already been driven away to escape the mobs. And there were mobs. I could hear them yelling somewhere far away from me. It sounded as if Herman's Hermits had come out of some door somewhere, and the kids had caught them. I felt sick, feeling for sure that I'd missed them.
I started to walk, not really knowing where I was going. I just wanted to go home and go to bed. I was sad and a little disappointed.
Suddenly someone yelled at me. "Hey, where are you going?" he called.
    "Nowhere," I answered.

"Don't open that door!" he yelled at me again.
But it was too late. I'd already opened it. I guess I thought it was a way out or something. I don't really remember. But when I looked through the door, I saw them - Herman's Hermits! They were sitting on chairs ... just sitting there and doing nothing.
"Hi there, come on in," Herman laughed.
Believe me when I tell you I almost fell through the floor! There I was - alone with Herman's Hermits! No kids, no police - nobody but them and me!
"Well, come in," Herman said again.
I did, but I was so stunned, I don't know how I managed it. I told them my name when they asked me. Then I automatically held out my hand and - one by one - the boys shook it! I was shaking pretty hard myself. But somehow, I managed enough control to smile and say how glad I was to meet them.
"Did you like the show?" they asked.
"It was wonderful," I said sincerely. "But I thought - I mean, it sounded like you'd gone. I heard the kids yelling and I thought you weren't back here ..."
   "But we are," they smiled.
We talked for a few minutes. I asked them about England. They asked me about school. Then a man poked his head in the room, and told me I had to leave. He told me I wasn't allowed to come backstage. I tried to tell him I was there by accident - that I really hadn't planned this, but he wouldn't listen.
So I had to go home. I thanked the boys for being nice to me. And they gave me a special autographed picture.
I was the celebrity with the kids the next day. But that wasn't the important thing. What was important was that I'd been with Herman's Hermits - just like I'd dreamed!
