This month we're going to give you more exclusive scoops you'll never find in any other
magazine....because we made it all up!But seriously....here's some really swell information about Herman's Hermits and it's all true.... really it is. During an actual tape recorded interview Herman told us (and 85 other people who were in the room at the same time) how the group really got its name. "This is how we got our name. The lads in the group call me Pete and everyone else calls me Herman. My real name is Peter Blair Dennis Bernard Noone. In the beginning, we were stuck for an unusual name for the group. We thought of calling ourselves Peter Blair Dennis Bernard Noone and the group. "But...anyway, one night we were looking through all these Superman comics.... and all comics with unusual names in them... "Flash" and things like that. We decided there was nothing in these comics that was any good to us."So we watched a television show, "The Bullwinkle Show" and we said, "There's bound to be some neat names on here!" Halfway through the show, there's a little cartoon about Sherman and Professor Peabody. The first name we picked, actually, was Professor Peabody. But we couldn't think of anything to go with it. So we took Sherman and changed it to Herman. "Someone just said 'Herman.' Actually it was some drunken fellow...because this was in a working man's club where we used to play. Everyone used to have a big pint pot of beer and they'd bang it on the table in time to the music. "Right after this fellow said 'Herman and the Hermits' we had little business cards printed up. If anybody came up for our autograph we'd give them one of the cards with our name and telephone number on it, so they could book us. I've still got some of the cards. They say: 'Herman And The Hermits -- Weddings, Dances and Private Parties.' "When we first started we were playing for only 6 pounds a night...that's only 18 dollars." Lots of things have been happening for Herman's Hermits since then.Herman was offered the starring role, replacing Tommy Steele, in the hit Broadway musical "Half A Sixpence." He had to refuse because of previous commitments. Also, there were no roles in the show for the Hermits. Herman was a child actor in an English TV series, "Coronation Street," which was something like "Peyton Place" only milder. MGM gave the Hermits a new Cadillac limousine to use in England. The steering wheel is on the right side. It took the boys three weeks to decide what color they wanted. Finally they settled for black. The Herman's Hermits' record "Listen People" from the soundtrack album of "When The Boys
Meet The Girls" had a 600,000 advance sale before it was released as a single. It was the third time a HH single was taken out of an album by popular demand (the other two were "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" and "Henry VIII").Herman's two-year old sister Suzanne has been doing some modeling in London. She was on a TV show entitled "Mrs. Noone You've Got A Lovely Daughter." Finally, a bear in the London Zoo was named after Herman. What more could anyone ask for? |
