  Even Benny gave a few squeaks when we learned that Herb Alpert, Roger Miller and Frank Sinatra swept the honors board. The two British stars who made a tremendous impact were Tom Jones as the best new artist and Petula Clark as the best female vocalist. APPLAUSE While Herman was in town he walked in to check his letters at his American Fan Club office and found 300,000 mailings waiting for him! Among other guests at the dinner were Peter, Paul and Mary; Harry Belafonte; Lesley Gore; Astrud Gilberto; Al Martino; Sam The Sham, and the Womenfolk. Staff Seargeant Barry Sadler also attended and sang his No. 1 disc "Ballad of The Green Berets." Recording executives were out in full force at the dinner and all applauded the award to James Brown as the best R&B artist with "Poppa's Got A Brand New Bag." |
