HERMAN - A strange interview with him on this page, conducted by Bill Harry

Inside Herman
TERROR to me is when there's someone around I don't want to talk to . . . I actually shake when these people are around and I'm full of nervousness and want to get away . . . terror is having no money on me . . . being somewhere alien to my usual places and having no money, not even enough money for a taxi - and having no cheque book.
    Lulu
. . . I think she's great because she's about one of the the only people I don't understand because I don't know whether she's being genuine or phoney . . . she dresses well, she dresses oldish, if you understand me . . . she also smells nice - a weird thing to say that, isn't it? . . . She's the opposite of the type of girl I usually like . . . she's got faults like everybody else, but they're faults I don't notice . . . Most of the girls that I like seem to be messed up mind-wise - girls I met up with four years ago seem to be junk . . . I don't love Lulu, I really don't - I wish I did . . . I'm too hung up on myself . . . my love is in two different things - what I do and why I do it.
I plan my life so far ahead and I've got fantastic will-power - that's one of the main things I admire about myself . . . I made a decision that I'd achieve certain things before I was 21, but I could only do them by using will-
  power . . . people underestimate my will-power.
To become satisfied I have to achieve something . . . I'll never be satisfied because I've never been satisfied with anything I've ever done because we could have done a lot better . . . I've got a weird thing in my mind - I don't believe in large, big or enough . . . these three words don't exist with me.
Death is something I've never thought about - I'm too hung up on life.
I've got a weird thing about hate . . . when you think about the most hated men in the world, they're also the most successful in the world . . . Hitler really did everything he wanted to do . . . all men are the same whether they've got pimples, are black, or are Jews . . . everyone said Orson Wells was a comedian when he did what he wanted to do.
Hate for me is silly and insipid things like beetles and insects . . . I'm terrified of things like these, but surround myself with them to prove I don't fear them . . . when I was in the Philippines there were five cockroaches in my room and I couldn't sleep . . . so I killed them all and studied them - and in the end I thought, 'they can't kill me'.
A society makes morals, manners and things like that . . . I can't understand the outcry against miniskirts - I like them . . . miniskirts make a girl look good.
