Will Peter Take a New Musical Path?
For the first time Peter Noone is finding both 11 year olds and 23 year olds in the same audience. Can this mean a different musical progression for his group? In a personal interview with Datebook, Peter discussed the answers.

Q: Is your concert act the same as it was three years ago or have you changed in the direction you're going?
A: We're doing new things, because you see, we have the new fans as well as those who supported us three years ago. We have to entertain them all - new numbers for the new fans.

Q: Has your music changed in any way that makes it more diffficult for you to perform your recent recordings on stage? Has your music become more electronic, let's say?
A: Well, no one can ever duplicate what they do in a recording studio. You just never get the same sound on stage. But sometimes, we get a better sound on stage. Take the last four records - we've had strings and brass on the records. On stage, we just do what we can, but it often sounds much brighter than having the whole thing full, you know. We don't even want to sound like the record on stage. Because, you know, I can never sing the same thing twice in the same way.

Q: What do you think of the groups who use lightworks to strengthen their act?
A: People want light shows - and the groups who use them. I mean all those lights and things sometimes make you look fantastic. But I can't see how it helps a group, because obviously, it directs people's attention away from the group. It may be great if you've got moutaches and Indian football boots on, but I really can't see lights as a help.

Q:What are your opinions on the new groups?
A: Many of them are just entertaining each other instead of an audience. They're really playin' for other groups. I mean, all the groups I've seen - they might be great, and not original - except that they're doin' something that the audiences think are original. I mean, there's eight million groups runnin' around. All come from San Francisco. All have unusual names. All have long hair, Indian football boots and dark glasses, and lookin' as if they hadn't had a wash - all doin' exactly the same thing. They're bein' original day in, day out. The group who is doin' the best, the Monkees, is completely the opposite of everything else that has recently come out.

Q:Are you and your group planning to move in a direction you haven't moved in yet?
A: No, we're progressing slowly, but we're progressing properly. I mean, we're all very young boys compared with the Beatles, for example. Like they're all 27, eight years older than me - so I believe they've got eight years on me straight away - musically. So like next year, we'll have progressed another year in the right direction, but the Beatles will also have gone a bit further away from where I am.
We've been going for a long time, just progressin' slowly. Every record is in the same vein - not the same style, but the same vein. People know what to expect, but they still dig the sound.

Q:But you plan to stay away from the San Francisco sound?
A:Yes - really. Because it just isn't a sound. I mean, I saw people doin' it in England a long time ago - but they did it better.
