![]() When the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, they had only the Indians to contend with ... but when Peter Blair Denis Bernard Noone, 18 and his Herman's Hermits hit the beach last Aug. 9th at Atlantic City, they suffered the hardships of having love notes and stuffed animals flung at them by adoring fans (10,000 of them). The screaming Mimis were out in full force - and the boys loved it! The three-day stint at the seaside's Steel Pier was only one sample of Hermania along the way on their tour of 21 cities (19 States). In Connecticut, an irate police chief said: "No more! I can assure any organization that plans to sponsor entertainment of this type in the future that no permit will be issued by the Police Dept." He was stunned by the actions of the over-zealous teens and the deplorable lack of self-control. (Evidently the policemen didn't dig rock 'n' roll.) But no one is more amazed at the popularity of the Britishers than they themselves. In a recent interview Herman (Peter) exclaimed he never realized his group would go over so big in the U.S. and that the fans really knocked them out! The Manchester lads are giving the Beatles stiff competition - succeeding where others have failed - to the delight of MGM Records. Now MGM Studios has latched on tightly to their prized package, all of whom film debuted in When The Boys Meet The Girls, with Connie Francis and Harve Presnell. In between tour dates, the boys taped a Danny Kaye Show and the Al Hirt TV'er Fanfare, so by the time the quintet departed for English soil, they were pooped ... and the gendarmes throughout the nation heaved sighs of relief which echoed almost as loudly as the unforgettable screams of crowds afflicted with Hermania. But the relaxation didn't last long - for Herman's Hermits hit the beaches again - this time in Hollywood to start filming There's No Place Like Space, the title ironically describing the locality where the men wearing law-and-order badges would like most to be - at invasion time! |
