But it's not just gonks that pepper the popsters. When Herman appeared in Washington recently, he was pelted with money. "We collected four quid in five-cent pieces," he recalls. "I think it's a great idea." And travelling through the States Herman has picked up a fab collection of gear from things thrown by the fans, including a raccoon hat, T-shirts and even a whole collection of science fiction paper backs which were thrown on the stage by fans who had heard that he's a science fiction addict. When he and the Hermits were in Japan, they got a whole set of kimonos from the fans. Velly nice for Hellman and the Hellmits. "The biggest problem is how to get it all home - and where to put it when you've got it there," he says. Herman paid £10 excess baggage charge on a six-foot pink dog which he brought from the States for his sister. "I wear most of the identity bracelets and rings that the fans throw. But if it's anything too bulky, like gonks, then I give it away to other fans when I've autographed it." |
